In the Cath Lab at St. Michael's Hospital, the Technologist Assistant (TA) will be working as part of an interdisciplinary team in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider. The TA practices under direct supervision and guidance of the Medical Radiation Technologist who is in the Cardiac Cath Lab Technologist role and/or an Registered Nurse, both of whom are regulated health care professionals. The TA will ensure an efficient workflow in the area and will be accountable to provide support to both the patient and the Technologist/Registered Nurse, as needed. As part of a multi-disciplinary team receiving day-to-day direction from the Team Leader, Cardiac Technologist and/or Clinical Nurse Educator and/or CLM, the Technical Assistant is responsible for contributing to patient care by providing support to patients and the Cath Lab team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Some responsibilities include (but are not limited to) supporting MRTs/RNs with the below:

  • Supporting the MRTs/RNs in the Cath Lab with activities such as: functioning of equipment, inventory, logging, and patient preparation within Cath Lab.
  • Providing non-clinical support by prepping and cleaning scan rooms, getting supplies, restocking linen, scanning documents, etc.
  • Assist in the CIU (Recovery Unit) (ie patient care such as toileting)
  • Answer the phones and provide appropriate responses, escalate any questions to the Technologist as required
  • Work in collaboration with regulated and unregulated health care professionals in their assigned clinical area
  • Assist with patient positioning & repositioning (ex. Stretcher, imaging bed, wheelchair) including transferring patients to and from imaging table and transporting patients to and from entrances/exits
  • Facilitate patient navigation of changing rooms, belongings, gowns, etc.
  • Equipment - Assist staff with equipment quality control tests, sanitization of equipment and linen management
  • Liaises with appropriate members of the care team to identify patient care needs
  • Reports patient observations to appropriate member of the care team (Ex. comfort or safety factors)
  • Assisting monitor role with documenting supplies at point of use
  • Assists with setting up sterile tables
  • Cleans/disinfects soiled trays and removes and disposes of sharps
  • Assist TL with annual lead garment screening and facilitates daily lead garment organization
  • Assists with daily QA checks
  • Liaise with support services (ie engineering) to resolve facility issues
  • Reports technical issues to TL
  • Other duties as assigned to support the care team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Canadian or Internationally student enrolled in a recognized Radiological Technology academic program (YR 3 or 4) required.
  • Current BLS certificate is required
  • ACLS preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary team in a fast- paced environment required.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to manage priorities and balance multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development is essential.
  • Excellent attendance record required
  • Day, Evening, Nights, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts available. Flexible availability is preferred.
