POSITION SUMMARY:

The Early Learning and Development department is seeking a Cleaner and Program Support Worker for the Holland Bloorview nursery school sites: Play and Learn (Eglinton Avenue W and Bathurst). Our nursery school programs integrate children with and without disabilities, and promote awareness, support and understanding of inclusion for all children.

The Cleaner and Program Support Worker completes light duty cleaning and sanitizing tasks and, under the direction of the Early Childhood Educator (ECE), assists, supports, and guides children through their daily activities as needed.

This is a morning position, scheduled for 16 hours per week (0.4 FTE). Shift times may be adjusted depending on program needs, but typically will not begin before 8:30 am or end later than 1:00 pm. Extended work hours during afternoon programming may occasionally be available in the event of staff absence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cleaning and Sanitizing

  • Prepare bleach bottles, conduct tap flushing
  • Set up & tidy up of children's washroom
  • Clean and sanitize toys and play spaces
  • Manage snack dishes (set out, collect, wash, sanitize)
  • Laundry- wash, dry, fold, sort, store program materials
  • Check inventory of supplies and communicate restocking needs to admin staff and/or ECE
  • Support ECEs to maintain an orderly classroom and safe equipment during program

Program Supply Classroom Duties

  • Provide care and support for routines and transitions for assigned children. These routines may include toileting, feeding, dressing and/or indoor to/from outdoor environment, etc.
  • Assist the ECE in the supervision, safety, and participation of children in a classroom
  • Maintain positive and open communication with staff, clients & families, students, volunteers
  • Embrace Holland Bloorview's philosophy regarding client and family-centred care practices
  • Effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating responsibilities and workload
  • Other duties as assigned

Quality and Safety

  • Maintain current knowledge and training in Holland Bloorview's emergency procedures
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client safety through work and daily practices
  • Follow organizational and licensing policies and procedures

Operations

  • The program is open from September to June annually. Closed for summer break (July, August), 2 weeks winter break (December),1 week March break (March) and Easter Monday.

QUALIFICATIONS / MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education & Training

  • Completion of Grade 12/OSSD or equivalent is required
  • Current Standard First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate - Basic Rescuer (C) required. If certification is not current, the successful candidate would be required to successfully obtain this credential in a timely manner upon being hired, at their own time/expense
  • A Food Handler Certificate is required. If you do not currently hold this certification, you will be registered to a mandatory course that will be provided at no cost upon being hired

Experience

  • Previous work with children aged 18 months to 5 years is required
  • Experience that includes working with children with disabilities (physical, developmental, communication and/or autism) is a strong asset
  • Experience working in a play-based childcare setting is an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and implement new processes on the job
  • Understanding of and commitment to client and family privacy and confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate in a sensitive, respectful, and courteous manner with children, parents, staff, students and volunteers

Other Requirements

  • Upon hire, staff are required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with their local police service and an Occupational Health Review including documentation of tuberculosis (TB) testing and vaccination status as per the Child Care Early Years Acy (CCEYA)
  • Upon hire, participate in a new staff orientation

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Fast paced and lively environment, requiring agility and considerable physical activity including significant walking, bending, pushing/pulling of materials and resources, and physical interventions to maintain safety and participation of children within the environment
  • Required to lift/carry materials, resources and/or children weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to physically assist ECEs to transfer/transport children into specialized and non-specialized equipment for indoor and outdoor play
  • Routine use of cleaning and sanitizing solutions, sanitizer equipment, and washer/dryer equipment (training and applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided)
  • Exposure to childhood illness and bodily fluids

Sensory demands

  • Noise generated within a classroom setting.
  • Sights and smells associated with physical care of children.
