Job Description

The purpose of the Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is to ensure that UHN has an effective suite of programs to promote and ensure the achievement of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility & Anti-racism (IDEAA) objectives and the creation of an inclusive and accessible working and learning environment across UHN - including TeamUHN, volunteers, patients, physicians and learners. In pursuit of this goal, the incumbent is responsible for designing and/or sponsoring educational programs and communications that enhance cultural awareness, promote the values of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-racism to UHN stakeholders and promote positive behavioural change. Additionally, the successful incumbent will lead the attainment of IDEAA goals for UHN and track progress toward achieving these goals, support and educate managers and People & Culture department (HR) representatives in understanding complex IDEAA issues, and help to identify and remove systemic contributors to inequity.

Major Outcomes

  • Effective programs are established and maintained to promote Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, including Accessibility and Anti-racism principles
  • Education and Communication programs are delivered to promote understanding and the positive acceptance and value of diversity, equity and inclusion, with attention to the representative groups of TeamUHN.
  • Core Human Resource Management processes are reviewed, adjusted and monitored for sources of systemic bias
  • Accessibility standards, best practices and legislation are fully integrated into UHN standard practices, and key stakeholders are educated on best practices and regulatory requirements
  • Key stakeholders (e.g., Executive Leadership, P&C) receive expert, context-sensitive analysis and advice.
  • Representation gaps are measured and progress made to closing gaps, subject to current administrative/technical capabilities.

Duties

  • Assist in the development and implement the organization's overarching IDEAA strategy, with a focus on long-term goal achievement.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on IDEAA trends and best practices and current conditions, integrating these into strategic decision-making.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to stakeholders
  • Maintain awareness of evolving relevant statutory and common law accessibility, human rights and IDEAA standards and communicate required changes to stakeholders
  • Support UHN Employee Resources Groups (ERGs) with guidance, structure and access to resources
  • Lead the determination of requirements and lead the creation and delivery of IDEAA education programs
  • Develop a calendar of IDEAA communications for UHN and, working with the Communications and Brand Strategy department, ERGs and other stakeholders, craft appropriate and sensitive communications to recognize and celebrate diverse groups within the UHN community
  • Advocate for the integration of IDEAA principles into all aspects of organizational operations, including projects and events.
  • Manage AODA regulatory requirements, multi-year accessibility plan, and promote accessibility across UHN; recommend expenses for accommodation requirements
  • Collaborate with People & Culture to ensure equity in hiring, promotion and compensation practices and outcomes.
  • Collect and analyze data on equity, diversity and inclusion, reporting progress, and identifying areas for improvement. Propose practical and effective actions to address representation gaps and inequities.
  • Working with P&C and other partners, determine best methods for collecting data on participation, systemic adverse impacts, accessibility and inclusion.
  • Foster relationships with external organizations, community groups, and industry partners to support IDEAA initiatives.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Human Resources, Social Sciences, Social Work or another related field; Masters Degree preferred.
  • Specialized education in Human Rights, accommodation, cultural competency and/or diversity
  • Relevant experience and demonstrated competency may be substituted for academic preparation

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience working in the field of Diversity and/or Employment Equity

  • You have a commitment to creating more inclusive environments and to advancing reconciliation, equity, and diversity
  • You have knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code
  • You have knowledge and understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
  • You have a thorough understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and of discrimination and harassment prevention frameworks
  • You have proven experience, education and awareness regarding anti-racism, Reconciliation foundation and principles, and best practices to honour and respect diverse, disadvantaged, and equity-seeking groups and group members
  • You have knowledge of legal requirements and best practices to design accommodations
  • You have a high level of cultural competency and cultural agility
  • You have exceptional communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills
  • You have the ability to effectively draft and/or revise policies and communications, and create or co-create training and education material
  • You have the ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and to communicate the story told by the data.
