The General Anaesthesia Nurse provides leadership and promotes excellence in pediatric and young adult, family-centred care. The General Anaesthesia Nurse supports the anaesthesiologist in providing holistic, family-centred care to infants, children, and adolescents who are receiving dental treatment under the provision of deep sedation and general anaesthesia, incorporating standards of practice as stated by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act. Within the framework of the vision, mandate, and core values of Nursing, he/she assumes a leadership role in developing partnerships with clients, families and other health professionals to ensure optimal care delivery.

The RN is registered with College of Nurses of Ontario and works to full scope of practice within the current legislative framework and based on the hospital policies and standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Specializes in care of pediatric and adolescent/young adults with physical and developmental disabilities
  • Able to set up IV for pediatric and young adult clients of various ages
  • Knowledge of phases of recovery of a client and possible emergencies
  • Preparation of the treatment room
  • Understands the principles of anaesthesia and the agents used
  • Knowledge and understanding of different stages of anaesthesia
  • Able to obtain anaesthetic equipment and drugs on request
  • Able to assess, assist and manage airway during transportation to recovery
  • Assists with medication management and maintenance of supplies and equipment
  • Bases practice on nursing science and content relevant to nursing from the sciences and humanities
  • Demonstrates a spirit of inquiry by examining current practice and identifying questions for study
  • Delivers care based on established policies and procedures
  • Provides nursing care that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being of clients and families
  • Advocates on behalf of the client/family to support quality outcomes of care
  • Interacts with members of the interdisciplinary care team and community providers as appropriate, to ensure an integrated approach to care
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care
  • Performs administrative tasks to maintain function of operating room and recovery room through ordering and restocking anesthesia supplies
  • Knowledge and ability to teach pre-operative instructions and initiate appropriate assessments for general anesthesia
  • Communicates with anesthesiologist to prepare for upcoming procedures, highlight patients' relevant medical history and patient or family questions or concerns
  • Liaise with community providers to provide safe and effective client care
  • Participates in risk management activities to ensure the maintenance of a safe healthy work environment
  • Utilizes the teaching/learning process to provide education, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students and other professionals within the organization and the community
  • Supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Experience working with pediatric and young adult populations preferred

Research

  • Demonstrates and utilizes the teaching / learning process to provide education, both formal and informal to clients / families, colleagues, students and other professionals within a fully affiliated academic healthcare environment
  • Shares new knowledge and best practices with colleagues and other professionals within the organization and the community
  • Participation in quality initiatives and measurements
  • Utilizes research to establish and support evidenced-based practice
  • Shares new knowledge and best practices with colleagues and other professionals within the organization and the community
  • Participates in nursing research where applicable

  • Regular check-ins with Nursing Team to support with ongoing scheduling, onboarding, workload planning
  • Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice by adhering to established professional practice standards
  • Contributes to the development of professional nursing practice through participation and leadership in unit
  • Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous development of self by identifying learning needs and establishing annual goals and objectives
  • Maintains own knowledge, skills, and abilities through education, and training both in-house and in post-secondary institutions
  • Manages change in a constructive and appropriate manner
  • Ensures that nursing practice issues are addressed using appropriate lines of communication within the organization
  • In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team, provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
  • Supports and respects the client/family's rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Bases practice on established policies and procedures
  • Interacts with members of the interdisciplinary team and community providers to ensure an integrated approach to service
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner

Education

  • Currently registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the general class in the RN category acting under the required order and the direct control and supervision of a dentist or a physician, currently registered in Ontario
  • BCLS certification upon hire and/or ACLS and PALS certification preferred within 8 months of hire and recertified within every 2 years
  • Successful completion (or obtained within 6 months of hire date) of a PeriAnesthesia Certificate, PACU certificate or training program designed to produce competency in the specific modality of sedation and general anesthesia utilized
  • A minimum of three years experience in an acute hospital setting in the PACU or intensive care or emergency department within the last 5 years required
  • Specialty knowledge in pre/post care management of dental oral surgeries preferred

Experience

  • Two years of recent surgical or PACU nursing preferred

Certification/Licenses

  • Current certificate of competence by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Membership in RNAO preferred
  • CNA Certification in PeriAnesthisia preferred
