Job Description

The UHN Genetics Program specializes in meeting the needs of individuals diagnosed with an inherited condition or those who may be at risk for an inherited condition. The team provides family risk assessment, diagnosis, management, education and support to patients and their families.

The Genetics Program is currently seeking a permanent full-time Genetic Counsellor. The Genetic Counsellor will be responsible for providing genetics care in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC), affiliated with the Toronto General Hospital. This role involves being fully embedded within the cardiology team at PMCC, working with cardiologists and a cardiac genetic counsellor as well as other team members. This position may include the ability to participate in research activities in addition to the opportunity to participate in student supervision depending on experience.

The principal responsibilities include:

  • Assessing the unique medical/genetic and psychosocial needs of individuals with inherited heart conditions for the purpose of providing appropriate counselling, education, testing options, and follow-up
  • Working on-site with multiple cardiology teams (ie hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, heart function, inherited arrhythmia) to provide genetics support, including both ambulatory and inpatient services
  • Working on-site fostering collaborative relationships with key stakeholders to develop innovative models of genetics care delivery
  • Performing administrative responsibilities to ensure the effective management of individual cases, acting as an advocate for patients, performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested, including data management and validation
  • Performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
  • Depending on level of experience, participate in supervising genetic counselling students and participate in education of medical students, residents and fellows
  • Participate in weekly academic activities including genetics rounds and case review

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Genetic Counselling
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible with the ABGC and/or CAGC
  • Two years previous experience preferred although new graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Previous experience in cardiac genetics preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and professionals
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to a wide variety of patient populations and needs
  • Broad-based knowledge and versatility
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record.
