Lactation Consultant Pediatric Research Target (Job ID: 8476)
Brief description of the project:
TARGet Kids! ( www.targetkids.ca ) is developing a multi-disciplinary paediatric practice-based research network of community practitioners mainly from Toronto. Under the mandate of "healthy children together", our network is collecting longitudinal medical evidence on common health problems affecting urban Canadian children, including indices of nutritional exposures, pediatric obesity, environmental exposures, and social factors.
Here's what you'll get to do:
We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, respectful, results-oriented Lactation Consultant to provide breast/chestfeeding support and teaching to postpartum patients and their newborns. Reporting to the PI/Program Manager, you will be responsible for providing quality patient care for the NuRISH Trial (a pragmatic, randomized, longitudinal factorial Trials within Cohorts clinical trial).
The Lactation Consultant integrates skills and knowledge in the clinical management of infant lactation feeding using principles of adult learning, education and research findings in the care of patients.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Work in collaboration with patients and their healthcare team to develop and implement individualized lactation and infant feeding plans for families while adhering to the research protocol.
· Provide continuity of care for infants with feeding issues.
· Provide continued education to postpartum families to assist them with breastfeeding initiation and continuation.
· Collaborate in multi-disciplinary research related to human lactation and infant feeding.
· Complete documentation and assessments as required by the research protocol
· Attend one-hour monthly supervision meetings for the study duration.
· Travel to community locations, including public spaces and patients' homes, to deliver care.
· Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· International Board Certification as Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
· Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certifications.
· Minimum 5 years experience working with child-bearing families and in maternal health settings.
· 2 to 5 years recent experience working as a Lactation Consultant.
· Current member in good standing of association(s) affiliated with human lactation.
· Demonstrated skill in staff/patient education and adult learning principles.
· Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast paced, demanding environment.
· Strong customer service skills with proven ability to interact with all levels of staff and diverse patient group.
· Excellent communication and language skills, organizational skills, decision making/problem solving skills and interpersonal competence are essential (foreign languages an asset in addition to English/French).
· Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the Mission and Values of Unity Health Toronto.
· Valid drivers license and regular access to a vehicle.
· Proficient computer skills.
· Hours: Generally Monday to Friday (7.5 hours) with some flexibility for evening/weekend hours to accommodate participants' needs
