Manager Nursing Practice (Job ID: 9431)
Reporting to the Senior Director, Nursing Practice and Education, the Nursing Practice Manager provides exemplary leadership for nursing practice and nursing standards that supports and ensures Unity Health Toronto delivers optimal patient care. The Nursing Practice Manager also provides leadership in creating, articulating and sustaining Unity Health Toronto's vision for nursing and inter-professional collaborative practice.
The primary responsibilities of the Nursing Practice Manager include: providing optimal leadership around nursing practice and nursing practice standards; evidence based practices, best practice guidelines; managing, motivating and providing professional practice direction for staff to ensure excellence in patient care; performing planning and operations responsibilities to facilitate the achievement of corporate/ program objectives and the creation of a healthy workplace that maximizes the potential of nursing staff; identifying financial needs to support nursing practice initiatives; contributing to corporate efforts and initiatives, as appropriate, to enhance Unity Health Toronto's mission, values and goals; representing the job internally on committees and other venues, as required; representing Unity Health Toronto in the external community at conferences, workshops, etc.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Nursing Leadership Practice:
- Develops, implements, manages and evaluates short and long term plans which support and advance nursing practice and nursing standards;
- Promotes continuous quality improvement initiatives to ensure:
- Ongoing professional development of nursing staff;
- Appropriate standards are implemented for the provision of optimal patient care;
- Appropriate mechanisms are in place to protect the privacy and confidentiality of patient records, etc.
- Establishes and implements standards to ensure the safe, effective and efficient delivery of excellent care to all patients;
- Supports educational strategies to enhance staff knowledge with respect to professional nursing practices and patient care;
- Participates in special projects and corporate management initiatives that support and advance Unity Health Toronto¿s Corporate Strategic Plan including goals and objectives, Inter-professional Strategic Plan, Quality Improvement Plan;
- Promotes a culture of reflective practice by providing profession specific leadership and mentoring in an evidence based continuous learning and research based practice environment, including:
- Providing professional governance on the quality of professional practice delivered by nursing staff;
- Identifying, leading and monitoring initiatives related to the professional practice delivered by nursing staff;
- Facilitating the advancement of professional practice;
- Providing leadership and acting as a resource for internal and external stakeholders;
- Coaching, mentoring and guiding practice development for nursing staff and inter-professional teams;
- Monitors regulatory/practice updates and changes and develops and/or supports the implementation of necessary changes in nursing practice
- Provides leadership in identifying and overseeing opportunities to create and sustain inter-professional collaborative practice
- Provides consultation to Senior Program Directors, Patient Care Managers (PCMs)/Clinical Leader/Managers (CLMs), Clinical Educators ¿ Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialists, other nursing roles and inter-professional teams on clinical practice and safe, quality patient care.
- Collaborates with Senior Program Directors and PCMs/CLMs in initiating and conducting nursing practice reviews and making any recommendations for improvements in nursing practice.
- Works with and supports PCMs/CLMs in preparing mandatory reports to the College of Nurses of Ontario including any inquiries.
- Demonstrates nursing leadership and actively contributes in councils (e.g., Nursing Advisory Council), committees, task forces and working groups
Quality Management:
- Manages the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives which are in alignment with Unity Health Toronto¿s Corporate Strategic Plan, Inter-professional Strategic plan, Quality Improvement Plan, policies, procedures and standards;
- Implements quality management techniques designed to advance the services provided by Nursing;
- Monitors quality improvement outcomes on a regular basis; develops action plan to address identified issues;
- Coaches staff to ensure that continuous quality improvement initiatives are incorporated into day-to-day activities;
- Collaborates with Corporate Nursing Education Managers, Clinical Educators ¿ Nursing, PCMs/CLMs nursing staff, inter-professional teams, etc. in planning, implementing, evaluating and sustaining changes in clinical practice;
- Supports organizational strategies and initiatives;
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in nursing practice.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Identifies opportunities for nursing staff secondments to support departmental projects, supervises and evaluates performance of seconded nurses;
- Conducts performance management responsibilities, including: developing, implementing and communicating performance measures; providing ongoing coaching and constructive feedback, in a timely manner; etc. to any direct reports and others;
- Identifies and manages employee issues/concerns, utilizing appropriate conflict resolution skill, while taking appropriate action to ensure matters are resolved, in a fair and timely manner;
- Determines and implements standards for staff skill/productivity/education levels, ensuring appropriate certification/licensure;
- Identifies/determines training needs; promotes and facilitates opportunities for staff professional growth and development, including staff participation in internal/external learning activities e.g., educational in-services, seminars, workshops, external training/courses, etc.;
- Ensures all department staff are appropriately trained with respect to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and carry out their responsibilities in a safe and responsible manner;
- Promotes a teamwork environment where staff from diverse multilingual and multicultural backgrounds can interact productively and efficiently;
- Contributes to performance appraisals, following Hospital guidelines;
- Imparts knowledge of policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies.
Human Resources:
- Maintains responsibility for developing and executing human resources strategies for attracting, hiring, managing, developing and motivating union and non-staff;
- Provides direction/leadership for the team as a coach and mentor; defines accountabilities while directing and supporting the achievement of performance goals, within functional area of responsibility;
- Conducts performance reviews, of direct reports on an annual basis and/or as required to ensure excellent in the provision of work activities; takes appropriate corrective action, where appropriate, up to and including termination, as required to meet identified departmental needs;
- Implements appropriate systems to support the delivery of their day to day functional activities, as required;
- Develops and executes strategies to build and foster an effective team environment and a culture built on respect, trust, wellbeing and lifelong learning for staff, ensuing appropriate systems are in place to facilitate succession planning and appropriate management of vacancy;
- Provides advancement opportunities for future leaders, acting as a mentor for staff to facilitate development/attainment of leadership skills and technical competencies for the provision of excellence in work activities;
- Collaborates with the Management team to strategize on recruitment efforts for key positions to ensure the team possesses the required technical and other relevant skills to contribute to the success of the department;
- Supports and ensures staff have opportunities for professional development, career advancement, department wide training and educational opportunities;
- Promotes a teamwork environment where staff from diverse multilingual and multicultural backgrounds can interact productively and efficiently.
- Maintains responsibility for providing recognition, feedback and ways to motivate staff;
- Works to ensure fair and equitable hiring practices are employed;
- Demonstrates effective interviewing skills to identify appropriate candidate; hires staff in accordance with the hospital's mission and values.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in either the General or Extended Class; member in good standing.
- Current certificate of licensure/registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required;
- Masters Degree in Nursing required;
- Current membership in RNAO required
- Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification required
- Eligible for cross-appointment with Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto;
- Comprehensive knowledge of the CNO Standards and Guidelines for Nursing in Ontario;
- Knowledge of relevant legislation impacting nursing practice;
- Previous experience managing large change initiatives an asset;
- Good working knowledge of Quality improvement principles and methodologies;
- Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in nursing; recognized role model for nursing professionalism;
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team;
- Excellent interpersonal, coaching skills; consultation and negotiating skills;
- Proven effective communication and presentation skills, analytical skills, problem solving skills;
- Current membership in related professional interest group or association preferred
