Job Description

Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $63.05 - $75.27 per hour (Start rate in accordance with collective agreement)
Status: Permanent Full-Time

As a member of the Interprofessional Genitourinary (GU) Radiation Oncology Team, the nurse practitioner (NP) functions in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to manage the care and navigation required for patients referred to the GU Site at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Principal responsibilities include providing care to patients referred for management of GU malignancy, including independently and also collaboratively leading new patient consult/repeat consult, review and follow up clinics alongside a Staff Radiation Oncologist. The NP will also collaborate with Research and Education leads to aid in the screening and recruitment of patients to relevant trials. There may be opportunities to expand into other clinical domains including aspects of brachytherapy, radiotherapy and systemic therapy (including radionuclide / theranostics) as these pertain to GU cancer management. The NP will work within the multi-disciplinary GU team within the Princess Margaret as well as referring institutions to provide patient education, psychosocial support and optimize the navigation of GU cancer patients along the cancer journey and seamless transitions of care.

Additional principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for GU cancer patients. This will involve collecting and interpreting data about the health history of the patient, performing pertinent physical exams, facilitating discussions surrounding the role of radiation therapy in GU cancer, educating patients regarding potential treatment side-effects and management, treating complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems, leading follow up care, and discussing survivorship care issues. The role and responsibilities may evolve over time as this is a new role within the Radiation Medicine Program; however, the core principals will remain as described above.

Other responsibilities include academic and leadership activities, including leading, coordinating and participating in research and/or quality improvement activities, orienting and educating new NPs and members of the interprofessional team and participating in ongoing professional development activities. The successful candidate will require clinical knowledge and skills to care for patients, but also a level of comfort with ambiguity while establishing role clarity within the GU site group and the continued expansion of the GU Radiation Oncology Program.

The NP will report directly to the Director of Professional Practice, Princess Margaret.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Masters degree
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario Registration in the Extended Class (EC) as a NP (adult) or NP (Primary Health Care) required
  • Demonstrated expertise as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Up to five (5) years of relevant experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in new patient and follow up clinics preferred
  • Experience in nursing research methodology an asset
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Certification in CNA Oncology Nursing preferred
  • Evidence of professional malpractice insurance
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) and other organizations relevant to the role preferred
  • Knowledge of data management programs an asset
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Program planning and evaluation methodology skills an asset
