Work Model: On-Site and Remote
Salary Range: $51.54 - $64.43 (Commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN Compensation Policy)
Hours: 37.50 Hours/Week
Shifts: Days; Weekend Coverage 1 in 4 Weeks; Rotating On Call for Code Stroke
Status: Permanent Full-Time

Position Summary

University Health Network (UHN) is seeking an experienced nursing professional to fill the key role of Nurse Practitioner in our Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) Stroke/ Neurovascular Program

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to triage, formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage patients principally in the Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Stroke (TAMS) program. The role will require strong ability for independent practice but also collaboration with interprofessional team members to ensure seamless intervention and communication. As an integral member of the clinical team providing care to patients requiring stroke-related care, the NP will also provide leadership in identifying opportunities for improving patient care and provide support, guidance and facilitate the development of knowledge in nursing staff involved in this population of patients.

Duties

The principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for patients with Stroke, Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Stroke issues involving:

  • collecting and interpreting data about the health of the patient;
  • determining a medical diagnosis, ordering appropriate investigative tests/procedures, and treating complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems;
  • leading code stroke response cascade and related activities;
  • delivering and coordinating patient and family education;
  • engaging in evidence-informed practice by critically appraising and applying research and best practice guidelines and performing research activities;

The NP will also:

  • provide leadership in identifying opportunities for improving patient care;
  • provide support, guidance and facilitate the development of knowledge in nursing staff involved in this population of patients;
  • play a leadership role and performing quality improvement;
  • participate in education and professional development activities/programs;
  • perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession;
  • act as a resource and serves as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies;
  • perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required;

Qualifications

  • Completion of Master's Degree Program in Nursing
  • College of Nurses of Ontario Registration in the Extended Class (EC) as a NP adult (preferred) or NP Primary Health Care
  • Demonstrated expertise as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Current Certificate of Competence and in good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Nursing experience in the treatment of acute stroke and/or neurovascular patient preferred
  • Certification in NIH Stroke Scale and experience in Canadian Neurological Scale preferred
  • Canadian Nurses Association certification in Neuroscience Nursing preferred
  • Proficient in clinical documentation and the use of healthcare information systems. UHN uses Epic and a requirement of the role is proficiency with Epic once hired and on boarded.
  • Experience in nursing research methodology
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other organizations relevant to the role
