Salary: $31.00 - $31.89 per hour (start rate in accordance with collective agreement)

Position Summary

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a member of the inter-professional care team and is expected to maintain a collaborative and active working relationship with team members in the provision of patient care.

Duties

  • Develop supportive relationships considering patient and family choice, maintaining professional boundaries and the direction of the plan of care.
  • Observe and respect patient rights, dignity including adhering to confidentiality and privacy legislation.
  • Assist in the delivery of the fundamentals of care (ADLs); ensuring quality patient care aligned with UHN standards (hygiene, dressing, oral care, vital signs, etc.)
  • Assist with activities associated with toileting e.g. mobility and /or transfers to toilet, bedpan or commode.
  • Assist with the mobilization of patients using correct techniques for patient handling specific to lifting, turning and positioning.
  • Assist with the mobilization of patients and utilization of appropriate assistive devices (i.e. walkers, lifts, canes, wheelchairs, etc.)
  • Assist with patient behaviours to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to understand and apply strategies in patient interactions in care (i.e. behavioural management, communication, etc.)
  • Assist with feeding and hydration; aware of patients nutritional status and dietary restrictions; including documenting volume of food/fluid intake and output.
  • Measure and report patient weight using standing, wheelchair/seated or bed scale.
  • Collect, obtain, label and handle specimens as per hospital policy.
  • Collect and replace soiled linen, making patient beds (occupied and unoccupied).
  • Document direct patient care provided or relevant interventions including patient response.
  • Escort and transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory (wheelchair-bound, stretcher) patients, as required.
  • Pick up, move and deliver equipment and products within unit and across organization, as required (move beds, deliver specimens, etc.).
  • Performs cross-functional and other duties consistent with the skills and competencies, as required.

Qualifications

  • Education: Successful completion of a PSW program from an accredited community college or a recent UHN approved private career college.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certificate.
  • Behavioral management training is considered an asset.
  • Ability to handle daily mild to moderate physical exertion (i.e. constant standing, walking, climbing, reaching and frequent movement) on an occasional to frequent basis.
