Department: Medical Day Unit (MDU) & Other Ambulatory Clinics
Reports to: Manager
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $39.07 - $56.00 per hour (start rate in accordance with collective agreement)
Status: Permanent Full-Time
Closing Date: January 16, 2025

Position Summary

The Medical Day Unit (MDU) assists outpatients with a wide variety of medical conditions.

The majority of patients require:

  • Treatment for thalassemia/sickle cell anemia
  • Infusion therapy (i.e., medications & blood transfusions)
  • Minor medical procedures (i.e., paracentesis, liver biopsy, muscle biopsy, therapeutic phlebotomy)
  • Wound dressing
  • Assisting physicians with procedures

As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The principal responsibilities include: applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision-making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN; ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a university, college, or other approved nursing program
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
  • Current certificate of competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Physical Health Assessment Course
  • Completion of the ECG interpretation course is an asset
  • Two years each of recent Medical and Surgical Nursing
  • Experience with phlebotomy, IV insertion, insertion of and access to vascular access lines, and administration of blood products
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and good judgement with the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work as an integral member of a team
  • Excellent independent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Patient teaching skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment to meet the needs of a changing population
  • Ability to utilize information technology
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
  • B.Sc.N. preferred
  • PACU/OR experience preferred
