Job Description

Union: ONA (10 Positions)
Site: Toronto General Hospital
Department: Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU)
Reports to: Nurse Manager
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $39.07 - $56.00 per hour (Start Rate in accordance with collective agreement)
Shifts: Days/nights/weekends; 11.25 hour shifts
Status: Permanent Full-Time
Closing Date: November 7, 2024

Position Summary

The Medical Surgical Intensive care unit at TGH is a 38 bed level 3 critical care unit providing care to approximately 1000 patients annually with complex medical and surgical conditions who require advanced ventilatory and hemodynamic support.

A highly skilled inter-professional team provides leading edge care to patients with:

  • Solid Organ Transplantation
  • Cardiopulmonary Failure
  • Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • Sepsis
  • Multi-Organ Dysfunction
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Pulmonary Thrombosis
  • Shock Syndrome

As a member of the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the principle responsibilities of the REGISTERED NURSE include: assessment - systematically collecting data about the health of the patient for initial screening, on-going or selected in-depth assessment in order to determine diagnosis; planning - identifying priorities, target dates, strategies or interventions in order to contribute to the individualized care plan and achieving optimal outcome for the patient; implementation - safely and effectively performing the strategies and intervention directed by the care plan; evaluation - systematically evaluating the extent to which the best possible outcomes have been achieved; providing educational guidance to the patient group; documenting patient records; acting as patient advocate by protecting and promoting patient rights; performing other duties consistent with the job classification as required.

Duties

  • Applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN.
  • Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession.
  • Performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care.
  • Performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification
  • Completion of a recognized Critical Care Course preferred
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years recent nursing experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Exceptional decision making and problem solving skills
  • Critical Care Nursing experience is preferred, however sponsorship in the Michener Critical Care program is available to suitable applicants
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.) certification preferred
  • Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
