The RN in Diagnostic Imaging works within a changing environment and as part of an inter-professional team to advocate for and promote wellness while ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and ethical nursing care. The RN shares their knowledge and expertise with others and contributes to the advancement of nursing practice excellence. The RN continually enhances their practice and competencies through ongoing learning, education, experience and reflective practice.

The primary role of the RN is to provide holistic, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, patient-centred quality care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards and Unity Health's mission, vision, values and policies. The RN helps to optimize the patient's experience and care outcomes by being accountable for one's decisions and professional practice, establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient, collaborating with other members of the patient's care team, and coordinating/communicating patient care activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acquires information to assess patient care and learning needs.
  • Develops a plan of care and integrates nursing activities with other inter-professional activities.
  • Engages in critical inquiry and reflection to select evidence-based interventions.
  • Organizes nursing care and assigns or changes nursing care activities where appropriate.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and adjusts the plan as needed.
  • Anticipates, recognizes and addresses rapidly changing situations.
  • Serves as the primary resource for organizing and coordinating patient care activities.
  • Establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative, therapeutic and inter-professional relationships.
  • Coordinates and communicates patient care activities for a safe and seamless transition and appropriate transfer of accountability.
  • Greet and assess interventional patients including initiating saline lock if applicable.
  • Triage and schedule patients as required. Communicate with floors regarding patient preparation and transport.
  • Arrange patient charts in sequence of booking, ensure paperwork is complete (ie. Lab results available). Check for any outstanding blood results and for all add-ons.
  • Communicate with Radiologist, IR technologist and Scrub Nurse regarding any changes or add-ons.
  • Monitor and recover all patients within the Nursing Station.
  • Review next day cases with Radiologist for prioritization. Prepare patient packages and update patient list on whiteboard.
  • Communicate as needed with other members of interventional team when transferring patients from interventional suites to nursing station.
  • Prepare interventional suites as needed for procedures.
  • Scrub, set up trays and assist Radiologist for interventional cases as required.
  • Document procedural vitals and data in patient¿s chart if applicable.
  • Documents observations, assessments and care provision.
  • Re-stock Interventional suites as needed and put away any supplies that are delivered.
  • Assist Radiologist with Interventional ultrasound procedures as needed.
  • Assist in any specialized procedures as needed (i.e. CT).
  • Performs aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Assists Anesthetist/Anesthetist Assistant as required.
  • Complete work-up and nursing assessment of CT Biopsy patients
  • Communicate with Radiologists to complete consent.
  • Prepare and work up all cardiac patients.
  • Provides health education to patients and their families using effective teaching strategies
  • Provide sedation for Interventional and CT procedures as needed.
  • Administer LASIX IV in CT and Nuclear Medicine as needed.
  • Complete narcotic count each day and order narcotics when necessary.
  • Count sterile trays from MDRD cart each morning and distribute as needed.
  • Place emptied MDRD cart in soiled utility room for soiled trays to be returned with the MDRD Inventory/Order form attached to the cart.
  • Ensure blanket warmer is stocked.
  • Notify Charge Nurse of any supplies that require ordering.
  • Perform daily checks on crash carts and oxygen tanks. Document on appropriate logs.
  • Perform quality control checks for blood sugar machine.
  • Respond to Foley catheter insertions requests as needed.
  • Check all wall suction and oxygen equipment. Replace items in clear code blue boxes as required.
  • Respond to overhead calls from other modalities within Diagnostic Imaging to assist as needed (i.e. IV checks, patient fainting,..).
  • Respond to any calls for help with patient transfers within Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Assist with any saline lock insertions.
  • Trouble shoot with any nursing equipment.
  • Assist with a code blue / medical emergency.

Qualifications include:

  • Currently registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Recent experience in Interventional Radiology is preferred.
  • PICC line insertion certificate required. Enrolled with successful completion required within 1 year of hire may be substituted if there are no qualified applicants.
  • Experience with sterile techniques an asset.
  • Recent experience in OR, PACU, Cystoscopy, Endoscopy or ICU is preferred.
  • Current CPR/BLS required.
  • Previous experience with central lines preferred.
  • Experience with critically ill patients preferred.
  • Must be competent at IV insertion.
  • Experience injecting into Central Venus Devices preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to function as a team player.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Self-directed and motivated.
  • Able to handle the physical requirements of the job.
  • Proven planning, time management, organization and coordination skills.
  • Able to prioritize cases.
  • Working knowledge of Diagnostic Imaging procedures preferred.
  • Excellent attendance record.
