Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Wage Range: $39.07 - $56.00 per hour. (Start rate in accordance with collective agreement)
Status: Temporary Full-Time (Contract End Date: January 16 2026)
Shifts: Days/Evenings/Nights/Weekends/Holidays 0715-1915 and 1915-0715
Closing Date: October 31, 2024

Position Summary

As a member of the Combined Surgical Unit's (CSU) Nursing/Multi-disciplinary Team, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

The Combined Surgical Unit is an inpatient care unit that provides care to patients admitted under the following services: General Surgery, Urology, Hand/Plastics, Ophthalmology, Short Stay Orthopaedics and Bariatric Surgery. Patients on the CSU range in age from 18-80. These patients come from the local community or are referred to the hospital for the tertiary care capability. These patients arrive from across Ontario and in some cases from both ends of the country. The majority of General Surgery patients are undergoing surgical treatment for cancer of the GI tract. Some acute non-cancerous conditions exist for patients within this population. Urology patients suffer from urological dysfunction, cancer or the urinary system, or trauma to the system. Hand/plastic patients are split into two categories: reconstructive/microsurgery and acute trauma. Ophthalmology patients are admitted with severe endopthalmitis (eye infections), retinal detachments and glaucoma. Orthopaedic patients are admitted because of sports injuries or arthritic conditions. Bariatric patients will have undergone bypass surgery.

Duties

  • Provide complete comprehensive nursing assessments, with an understanding of the social determinants of health.
  • Complete triage of patients both in person and on the phone to aid in appropriate treatment and care decisions in relation to same day appointments, unscheduled care, and telephone calls from patients.
  • Assist in the functioning of the clinic to ensure smooth and efficient functioning.
  • Provide general primary care nursing to patients in keeping with nursing standards.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans/therapeutic interventions in consultation with patients and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Provides health teaching and education, counselling, and health promotion and prevention of illness to patients.
  • Make appropriate hospital and community referrals and follow up as needed.
  • Assists in the functioning of the clinic to ensure smooth and efficient operation
    Work collaboratively with other TWH UHN FHT staff and community organizations to improve client care, service delivery, and coordination.
  • Preceptorship of Primary care nursing students

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Microsurgical experience preferred
  • Excellent attendance record
  • Second language an asset
  • Computer literacy an asset
  • Two (2) years surgical experience in general surgery, urology, hand/plastics, microsurgical and/or ophthalmology preferred
  • IV certification, blood sampling, pulse oximetry, oxygen therapy, CBGM, PCA, epidural experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and decision making skills
  • Experience working in a team environment
