The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at St. Michael's Hospital, in collaboration with the Upstream Lab at MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions is seeking an enthusiastic and highly qualified applicant for the full time position of Research Coordinator II to fill an exciting position working in primary care research. The DFCM at St. Michael's Hospital is a large dynamic and diverse unit comprised of the hospital itself and five affiliated Family Medicine clinics, all located in Toronto's downtown core. Our researchers are leading significant work in the areas of: global and international health; social and economic determinants of health; population health; immigrant and refugee health; Indigenous well-being; primary care models; HIV and other infections; diabetes and other chronic diseases; and homelessness and pediatric research. The Upstream Lab is driven by the desire to promote health equity and address social determinants of health. Our research focuses on four streams: 1) integrating health and social care by addressing social needs of individuals in healthcare settings; 2) population health management; 3) using data to enable proactive care, and 4) conducting trials.

The successful candidate will work with the DFCM Research Director, Research Associate, and Resident Academic Project Lead. They will also work on with the Upstream Lab on our CHILD study that examines the role of health and social care providers in addressing the social needs of children and families living in areas where resources are scarce.

Research Duties

  • Review research ethics board submissions and amendments for adherence to departmental research policy; assisting investigators and trainees with preparing research ethics board submissions and amendments.
  • Support the Resident Academic Program at the DFCM including providing guidance on project ideas, execution, and dissemination.
  • Assist investigators and trainees with responding to research ethics board queries and ensuring approvals are in place.
  • Support the design and development of research protocols and grant applications including guidance on methods of data analysis and collection.
  • Help prepare presentations, reports, posters in consultation and negotiation with multiple stakeholders.
  • Help develop processes, tools (workflow, Gantt charts), guidance documents and other resources to support team members, and projects.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data collection, including designing interview guides, surveys, cleaning/coding data, and conducting interviews.
  • Ongoing coordination of study activities; day to day project management of timelines, resources, deliverables, and study tasks.
  • Design and synthesize annual research summary report highlighting key departmental research accomplishments using lay language and data visualization.
  • Writes manuscripts, prepares tables and figures, submits manuscripts and makes revisions.

Administrative Duties

  • Schedule meetings, coordinate room bookings, taking minutes at meetings.
  • Review and update research content on department website.
  • Design source documents (templates, tracking files, forms, guidance documents) for the collection, and management of information/data.
  • Create trainings, manuals, e-learning content as needed.
  • Assist with planning and co-ordinating research-related events (including event advertising and marketing).

Day to day project and staff guidance

  • Mentor research trainees and learners within the department, including providing insight and guidance on best practices in research design and execution
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, standards and procedures for the scientific and technical work performed in the department.
  • Other assigned duties, as required.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Degree and 2 years of relevant experience, OR demonstrable equivalent combination of specialized education and experience.
  • Previous experience in preparing research ethics submissions, protocols, and research reports is required.
  • Experience with plain language writing is an asset.
  • Experience working with a diversity of stakeholders, learners, knowledge users, and decision-makers is an asset.
  • Experience with video conferencing software is required (eg. Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to work with Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g. SPSS, SAS, Stata, R/R Studio, Access etc.) and/or qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVIVO) is an asset.
  • Experience with graphic design software (e.g. Canva, Visme paint, or Photoshop etc.) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of survey software (Qualtrics, REDCap) is an asset.
  • Quantitative and/or qualitative research experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and an aptitude for accuracy, detail, problem-solving and ability to learn new skills is valued.
  • Professionalism, self-motivation and ability to work both independently and as part of a team are assets.
  • Experience in primary care research is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple, often competing priorities, and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
