Hours: 37.5 per week

Salary: $52,182 - $65,228 Annually (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)

Status: Temporary Full-Time

Position Summary:
The Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (AMDL) is a CAP/CLIA accredited molecular laboratory at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center. As an integral member of AMDL, the Laboratory Technician I will be responsible for handling and processing specimens to support clinical trials and translational research projects.

Duties:

  • Receiving, sorting and processing specimens following established procedures and guidelines; completing assigned workload to ensure the efficient operation of the laboratory
  • Preparing, handling and dispensing reagents, media and solutions, as required; preparing specimens for send out to other testing sites as needed
  • Maintaining inventory and supply control; performing other duties relating to specimen management
  • Maintaining quality control standards in assigned areas
  • Demonstrating understanding of the operation and performance characteristics of instruments/equipment as needed; making efficient use of laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Participating in communication activities to maintain and continually enhance the co-operation and coordination of services with other laboratory staff in the assigned area
  • Participating in professional development, education activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services
  • Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested; performing other responsibilities consistent with the job classification, as required.
  • Observing and understanding Hospital and departmental policies and procedures; adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining and protecting patient confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant diploma from a recognized institution, or recognized equivalent required
  • Certification from CSMLS, OSMT, or another agency recognized by the Laboratory Licensing Branch of the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario required
  • Current experience in Molecular Genetics laboratory preferred
  • Experience in sample processing and nucleic acid extraction from blood, bone marrow and FFPE tissue preferred
  • Previous research experience preferred
  • Must be willing to perform "on call" duty as required by the laboratory
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills
  • Effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and accurately under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Computer literacy required, Microsoft environment preferred
  • Understanding of appropriate behaviour required to work successfully in a diverse work group
  • Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practices
  • Computer literate in Windows based applications
  • Demonstrated interest in continuing education
