Reporting directly to the Vice President - Clinical Programs, the Senior Clinical Program Director for Surgery, Critical Care, Mobility, and Ambulatory Care is a pivotal leadership role overseeing a cross-site program that spans clinical services across Unity Health Toronto's diverse sites, including St. Michael's Hospital, St. Joseph's Health Centre, and Providence Healthcare.
The programs within this portfolio provide high-quality care to a broad patient population, encompassing the local community, regional, and beyond. The portfolio includes Surgical and Critical Care Programs at St. Joseph's Health Centre, with a focus on preoperative care, 12 operating rooms, cystoscopy suites, PACU, endoscopy suites, surgical clinics, and inpatient surgical units. The Critical Care Portfolio includes critical care and cardiac capacity, ensuring a comprehensive and seamless continuum of care.
As the Senior Clinical Program Director, you will work in close partnership with Medical Leadership and Chiefs, leading a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of professionals including surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses, and allied health disciplines. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the delivery of patient-centered care across all areas of the program, driving clinical excellence and fostering collaboration among diverse healthcare teams.
As an integral member of Unity Health Toronto's senior leadership team, the primary role of the Senior Clinical Program Director is to provide exemplary leadership, management, and strategic guidance to the Surgery, Critical Care, Mobility, and Ambulatory Care Program. Ensuring excellence in the provision of patient care in day-to-day operations as well as longer term program planning for improvements, the achievement of corporate/program objectives and the creation of a healthy workplace that maximizes the potential of all who work at Unity Health Toronto. The Senior Clinical Program Director will achieve this mandate working in close partnership with relevant physician leaders at Unity Health Toronto.
The Senior Clinical Program Director leads the strategic planning and operational management of all services in the Surgery, Critical Care, Mobility and Ambulatory Care portfolio and maintains responsibility for ensuring the efficient/effective management across all clinical programs delivery including all aspects of day-to-day operations planning, human resource and financial management. This involves facilitating program development and strengthening program vision, and promoting a culture excellence, discovery and innovation in all clinical and non-clinical activities within the programs and the development of external relationships with the community partners and stakeholders in patient care delivery.
Primary responsibilities of the SCPD role include:
- Providing senior operational leadership for the programs and services within the Surgery, Critical Care, Mobility, and Ambulatory Care
- Directing and aligning clinical operations to effectively achieve corporate and program objectives
- Providing leadership and oversight for the delivery of clinical care within the portfolio and ensuring that the quality of care properly meets the standards of care
- Planning and strategizing for changing circumstances and new program goals and objectives.
- Performing financial management and integrating financial considerations into programs in order to assist decision making
- Establishing priorities for program resource allocations, including operating, capital, and renovation plans
- Championing a customer service approach to program goals and associated community relations.
- Enabling continued professional practice development of staff.
- Ensuring the continuous development of direct reports and management teams through leadership, education, coaching and performance management
- Supporting the advancement of Unity Health Toronto's values based culture
- Collaborating with executive and peer leaders in fostering engagement and wellness of our people
- Build strong relationships with physicians, medical staff, and health professionals to ensure coordinated, patient-focused care delivery.
- Participating and/or leading internal senior leadership committee
- Communicating with the executive team, internal partners, external stakeholder, Ontario Health, and the MOH as appropriate to ensure strategic advancement of the portfolio in alignment with Unity Health Toronto's strategic plan and the broader Ontario Health strategy.
Overview of Role Requirements:
- Master's Degree in nursing or health discipline required
- Regulated Health Professional with certification in good standing from respective regulatory body
- Minimum of 8 years in progressive management roles in a health care setting, preferably in leading emergency care services and/or nursing resource teams, with at least 5 of those years in an acute care/hospital setting
- Experience in business planning, resource management, program planning, development, evaluation and managing patient care services is required for this role.
- Experience in leadership at a Director level an asset
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish positive working relationships with physicians, community partners, academic partners, and other programs and service providers
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of program management concepts to facilitate clinical and support services interactions within the programs
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement processes / systems to ensure effective and efficient program management infrastructure
- Demonstrated leadership in continuous quality improvement and operational excellence, LEAN experience and certification is an asset
- Demonstrated values-based leadership competencies
- Demonstrated experience in promoting a culture of learning, innovation, change and accountability within
- Demonstrated skill level in collaboration, negotiation, conflict resolution, human resources management, and financial management
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive working relationships with physicians, community partners, academic partners, and other programs and service providers
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislation, regulations, and policies
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in leading effective strategies to improve patient access and flow across complex systems
- Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation preferred
