Course# & Course Title: CHL3013H: Clinical Bioethics

Course Description:

CHL3013H is a 0.5 FCE elective course designed for the Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) in Bioethics program. The MHSc in Bioethics is a two-year professional Master's degree program. Its students are early and mid-career professionals who work in healthcare, public health or other health-related settings. The MHSc in Bioethics has a hybrid program format with both in-person and online components. CHL 3013H is a hybrid course with the in-person component conducted during a Residency Week in May at the University of Toronto on the St. George Campus and the online component conducted during eight 2-hr synchronous online seminar sessions scheduled through the Summer Term (see Schedule below).

CHL 3013H is an intermediate course that explores the theory and practice of clinical bioethics. It aims to deepen students' insight into the role and attributes of the ethical practitioner; the normative ethical features of clinical care; the interplay of biomedical science, health technology, health law and policy, and professional standards in creating and shaping ethical issues in clinical settings; and the application of practical ethical reasoning in addressing ethical issues in clinical care. Case studies will be a constitutive component of each session, some of which will be contributed by course faculty and many of which will be contributed by students based on their professional, disciplinary, and personal experiences and expertise.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of CHL3013H, students will be able to:

  • Define the key characteristics of an ethical practitioner
  • Recognize the role and influence of professional regulation, law, and institutional and societal context on ethical decision-making in clinical care
  • Describe the normative ethical features of clinical care practice and delivery
  • Apply principle- and case-based ethical reasoning to analyze and propose solutions to ethical problems in clinical contexts
