Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine

The Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine seeks to address health inequities, working alongside community organizations, UHN clinicians, marginalized populations, persons with lived experience, patients, and all levels of policymaking to co-design, evaluate, and scale innovative data-driven programs that lead to better health. Applying a social determinants of health approach, the Social Medicine and Population Health Program aims to bridge health services and the broader social environment of UHN's most medically and socially complex patients with the highest needs through the design, implementation, research and evaluation of new care models and initiatives to address the health implications of inequity.

Position Summary

The Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine is seeking a Social Epidemiology and Evaluation Specialist to work on under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Boozary. The position will support initiatives focused on the implementation and evaluation of new models of care, and is a unique opportunity to perform transformative research in the field of social medicine at a first-of-its-kind Centre. Key responsibilities will include leading qualitative interviews and qualitative data analysis of patients, clinicians and other stakeholders. The Social Epidemiology and Evaluation Specialist will draw conclusions for review and incorporation into quarterly research reports, assist in interpretation of results and preparation of material for presentation, publication and/or grants; assess literature routinely in the field of study, and may perform team-associated or study-related administrative tasks to support the successful completion of team tasks.

Duties

  • Leads coordination of the evaluation of the model and all research projects that stem from the evaluation
  • Conducts participant recruitment, consent, and applying both quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection and analysis
  • Assists with data verification and chart review, maintaining detailed notes
  • Manages ethics review submissions and service agreements/contracts across institutions in support of research objectives
  • Provides principal investigators and research team members with day to day support tasks such as checking in with team members for review and completion of tasks, calendar documentation of daily project related tasks
  • Leads data preparation, analysis, presentations and the development of study proposals under the direction of the principal investigator including analyzing and interpreting results using selected methods, preparing technical reports, summaries, protocols, manuscripts and quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Contributes to grant preparation, literature reviews, proposal development, develops and presents material for conference presentations and manuscripts
  • Participates in building and maintaining cross-institutional research project collaborations by supporting stakeholder meetings and shared deliverables
  • Prepares reports and presentations, and liaises with project stakeholders including patient partners, hospital administrators, government stakeholders and funders to facilitate knowledge translation
  • Develops methodologies and evaluation tools to measure program process, outcome, cost/benefit, and effectiveness
  • Conducts literature reviews, evidence briefs, and environmental scans
  • Supports other research and evaluation related projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • At minimum, successful completion of a masters degree in health or social sciences (such as Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Public Health, or Health Services Research); PhD preferred
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in research
  • Advanced research knowledge and skills in mixed methods research, including interpretation and analysis of qualitative research with integration/triangulation with quantitative findings
  • Proficiency in academic writing (manuscript and protocol development, poster and abstract development) with demonstrated experience in these areas.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and comfort with public facing roles (e.g. interviewing patients)
  • Experience with leadership and supervision of more junior team members and/or students
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills
  • Certification in research ethics core principals and guidelines (e.g. TCPS-2).
  • Experience in implementation science evaluation is an asset
  • Strong graphical communicational skills is an asset

Working Conditions

  • This role may require some evening/weekend work and travel to meet deadlines and/or to accommodate research participant schedules
