The division of Pre-Analytic Services specializes in Specimen Management, Outpatient/Inpatient Specimen Procurement, Inpatient/Outpatient ECG, Specimen Transport, and Customer Service. As a valued member of TeamLMP, you will play a key role in the department overseeing Pre-analytic operations of all UHN sites as well pre-analytic services provided to external clients.

Duties

  • Maintain primary responsibility for the daily operation of the pre-analytic services department including but not limited to:
    • Directly supervising assigned laboratory personnel, mobile phlebotomy and ECG teams, outpatient test centers, and customer service
    • Observing Hospital and departmental policies and procedures; adhering to Hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality
    • Ensure compliance with collective agreement provisions, legislative (i.e. Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, etc.) requirements and professional initiatives in all facets of laboratory operations
    • Participating in the grievance resolution process
  • Delegate assignments, organizes staffing schedules at all sites, assess staffing needs and ensures that all work of assigned staff is completed in accordance with established standards and schedules. Approve absence requests and monitor absenteeism.
  • Coordinate the delivery of professional development programs. Facilitate access to education programs for assigned personnel, while maintaining your own professional development
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures of the Clinical Laboratory, in consultation with the Laboratory Manager, Medical Director, or designate. Ensuring adherence to Hospital policies and procedures within the laboratory.
  • Ensure adherence to TeamLMP quality initiatives, recommend new/revised quality programs, guidelines, and measurements to facilitate the continued accuracy, reliability, and quality improvement of laboratory practices and services
  • Participate in quality improvement and workload measurement activities including: identifying problems, collecting, and analyzing data, to resolve technical work flow and other problems
  • Participate in the preparation and monitoring of the operational budget in conjunction with the Laboratory Manager. Assists with preparation of the capital budget in consultation with the Medical Director and Laboratory Manager
  • Maintains responsibility for laboratory equipment and products. Perform evaluation of new laboratory instruments and products and making acquisition/utilization recommendations
  • Travel to UHN and external client sites as required to supervise staff, projects, and maintain liaison with clients.
  • Maintain liaison with internal digital, patient relations, clinical, nursing, transport and facilities teams to ensure smooth operation as well as troubleshoot operational problems.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation
  • Participate in candidate recruitment and selection

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 3 year college program in Medical Laboratory Technology or recognized equivalent
  • Bachelors degree in Business/Health Administration or recognized equivalent
  • 3 - 4 years practical experience providing care in a hospital/medical environment with increased leadership/management responsibilities
  • 2 years supervisory (formal or informal) experience a laboratory environment
  • Has knowledge of applicable legislation affecting human resources (i.e. Human Rights, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.)
  • Excellent recognizing, analyzing and resolving problems skills
  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to form/defend independent judgment and to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinion, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
