The Community Ministries Coordiator position is a multifaceted position where the incumbent is expected to coordinate and provide oversight to all aspects of Community service programming.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accountabilities:

General:

  • Coordinate all existing and create new community ministry programming as needed to ensure ministry unit objectives are accomplished.
  • Conduct a community needs assessment and strategic planning to ensure all Community Ministries programming reflects the needs of the community and client needs as these may evolve with the ever-changing socioeconomic climate.
  • Actively work to recruit new volunteers and work with existing volunteers (including student volunteers) to assist in day-to-day community ministry operations.
  • Ensure that community ministers programs meet contractual, legal, and internal accreditation requirements as required.
  • Evaluate and potentially implement Pathway of Hope based on community needs assessment.
  • Collaborate with community agencies providing client referrals and support as needed.
  • Ensure accurate client information is entered into appropriate data bases and systems.
  • Accurately record and submit statistics.
  • Assess client needs and respond appropriately.
  • Network with The Salvation Army, government and, community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program.
  • Support Emergency Response events or preparedness training as required.

Communication and Reporting:

  • Ensure consistent communication by participating in regular meetings with corps officers, divisional and territorial personnel for all aspects of the role. Attend local community board meetings as required.
  • Ensure all client files and statistics for community ministries are accurately entered and completed on time for all areas of responsibility.
  • Attend and participate in trainings and meetings as required by the Ministry Unit, Divisional and Territorial Headquarters
  • Submit a Community Ministries progress report to Corps Council as required.
  • Provide reporting and feedback to the corps officer from community meetings attended.

Seasonal Responsibilities:

Christmas

  1. Provide oversight of the Christmas Kettle Fundraising Campaign, including assuming the role of the Kettle Coordinator if needed
  2. Coordinate the Christmas Toy Distribution Program (in consultation with the Corps Officers
  3. Coordinate or have involvement in any Christmas Community Dinners (in consultation with the Corps Officers)
  4. Develop relationships that will provide opportunities to recruit volunteers and solicit donations.

Summer Camp

  1. Ensure camp quotas are met and children are transported to camp as required.
  2. Develop and carry out plan for connecting with camp attendees throughout the year.

Health and Safety

  • Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Army's Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position based on 24 hours per week.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities - some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Time commonly spent in office environments in generally agreeable conditions, in service and administration areas of social service centers, or in Corps settings.
  • This position provides direct service to the community; supporting people from a diverse range of backgrounds and histories.
  • May be exposed to disagreeable people including the occasional angry and/or abusive client/public, working with people from all walks of life and backgrounds.
  • Kettle season may require incumbent to work increased hours to match the needs of the ministry unit.
  • May be required to move/lift/transport awkward objects and/or materials of up to 20 lbs.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma in Social Work or another Human Services Field
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 to 3 years of experience in a related field.
  • Previous experience with program facilitation, administrative duties, and program development
  • Demonstrated competence in developing and maintaining appropriate client relationships and interagency relations.
  • Able to perform general administrative tasks.
  • Experience with community development considered an asset.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
  • A team player; ability to work in a compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to enter data and perform statistical analysis efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently when required providing necessary information and documentation, if necessary
  • Capable of managing/ supervising staff and volunteers
  • Detail oriented skills and ability to juggle multiple cases.
  • High standards of integrity, judgment and confidentiality and an ability to model the values and standards of The Salvation Army
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public, government, business leaders and professionals.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
