Description

The Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army. This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided by the Community and Family services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Services and Program

  • Conduct initial intake application and screen clients for Ontario Energy Board (OEB) programs, , wellness program, general emergency assistance, including food, clothing, household needs, referrals etc.
  • Enter all relevant client information in Link2Feed system
  • Refer clients to Community Program Coordinator for OEB, Wellness, and Pathway of Hope programs
  • Refer clients to the Corps Officer for pastoral assistance.
  • Assist with the activities of the food bank, organize, and ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, adequate stock levels, sort and process donated goods and process clients through the food bank.
  • Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefits of clients and program when necessary.
  • Assist with organizing, planning, and delivery of seasonal and special programs as required. e., Summer Camp program and applications, Christmas Hamper applications for toys and food hampers, Christmas toy and food drives, Christmas Kettles and various other programs; ensure that ministry objectives are accomplished.
  • May be required to pick up community donations of food etc.
  • Work with other family services staff to maintain, promote and improve the profile of The Salvation Army in the community.

Supervision

  • May support, assist, supervise, train and schedule volunteers, demonstrate work methods and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
  • May assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.

Finance and Administration

  • Ensure that Ministry Unit policies and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e., Thrift Store vouchers.
  • Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information
  • Maximize utilization of all computerized management programs, i.e., Link2feed program and/or external programs as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information on computerized systems while maintaining confidentiality

Health and Safety

  • Adherence to all health and safety standards.
  • Assist with ensuring that the Food Bank and other Community Ministry spaces are maintained in regard to organization, appearance, maintenance and general cleanliness and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position based on 37.5 hour per week for 6 months.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities - with occasional evening and weekend work.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time; the ability to lift/move up to 29 pounds with no assistance from others.
  • Work may expose incumbent to disagreeable/angry clients which may require conflict resolution. Some occasional travel (<5%) is associated with this position, will be required to use a program vehicle at times.

Normal work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Hours of operation are subject to change.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Services Worker, counselling or equivalent in a related field of study.
  • Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification would be an asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues a variety of social service programs.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, own vehicle, and insurance provide an original copy of current driver's abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
