About the position: The Community Support Worker contributes to the Health Team through health advocacy, prevention and promotion and works under Supervision of the Cultural Program Manager. This position requires living a healthy lifestyle and being familiar with the Woodland Cree Culture. The main purpose of this position is to promote healthy traditional practices and assist the Health Team in providing health programming within their communities. S/he is required to prepare annual work plans and will also be expected to facilitate or undertake the evaluation of the Cultural Program.

Duties:

  • Assisting health staff in the delivery of health care services including but not limited to promotion, prevention and chronic care;
  • Assisting the elderly and disabled to live independently at home as long as possible by providing transportation for shopping, chopping wood, shoveling snow, hunting and gathering food, and referral to other health care professionals as necessary;
  • Home visiting, providing support, awareness, reinforce teaching, interpreting and advising;
  • Act as an interpreter between English and Cree speaking clients, health care providers, and accompany clients when necessary to appointments;
  • Assist in planning and organizing events such as culture camps, hunting & gathering, planting & harvesting community gardens, berry picking expeditions, trips and traditional outing for the elderly;
  • Engages families & community members in basic life skills from a traditional perspective.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 10 (combination of education & relevant experience may be considered);
  • Knowledge of & experience with First Nations culture & traditions is a must;
  • Ability to speak/understand Cree and knowledge of Cree Culture is required;
  • Excellent verbal & written communications skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving skills a definite asset;
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's license
