Job Description: The Community Mental Health Nurse (CMHN), reporting to the Manager of Mental Health & Addiction Services, is an essential element in a comprehensive Mental Health Service. The CMHN has extensive knowledge of the evidence based principles and practices of Community Health Nursing. A large portion of the CMHN's work is based outside of the clinic working independently. Each skilled CMHN is expected to monitor and administer medication, assess clinical status, provide case management, develop behavioral treatment programs, provide coverage for other recovery services team members, provide counselling and education and provide various forms of psychotherapy, including individual, family and group therapy. A CMHN provides health promotion, education and early intervention/prevention to the communities they work in. This position works in an integrated manner with other mental health and addiction programs.

Experience

  • 2 years of recent RN/RPN experience in acute psychiatric or community psychiatry

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
  • Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BScPN)

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)

Other Education and Training

  • Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing is acceptable
  • Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Psychiatric Nursing diploma is acceptable

  • Knowledge in models of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery
  • Ability to exercise independent nursing judgement
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide relevant educational services
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound clinical judgement
  • Ability to implement a specialized therapeutic program and consultative services
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Services Act
