Job Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) are seeking applications for the position of Anatomical Pathology Division Lead in Saskatoon. The Department has an accredited residency training program in General Pathology and provides training at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral levels. The Division of Anatomical Pathology is staffed by 26 pathologists, representing a hybrid specialist practice model.

The division lead works collegially with an administrative division manager in a dyad relationship. The Division Lead is responsible for all medical and scientific functions and facilitated an environment supporting the academic mission within the Division of Anatomical Pathology in Saskatoon, SK. The Division Lead reports to the Area Department Lead of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for Saskatoon. The Area Department Lead, in consultation with various stakeholders, appointments the Division Lead. The position is a 5 year term, renewable one time.

Division Lead responsibilities and duties include ensuring appropriate allocation of clinical resources, call allocation and quality improvement.

The Division Lead is responsible for the management of all members within the division. This includes allocation of clinical duties ensuring quality assurance and providing feedback to members on performance.

The Division Lead is responsible for developing and executing on a strategic plan in conjunction with the SHA. The position is expected to work very closely with the SHA Pathology operations on executing the strategic plan. This includes defining the future physician resource needs within the Division.

The Division Lead is responsible for Divisional Quality and Safety. This includes ensuring compliance with SHA and Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Quality and Safety requirements and compliance with regulatory bodies. The Division Lead is responsible for responding to all Quality and Safety issues and concerns in a timely manner.

The majority of the time in the position is devoted to ensuring the operational success of the Division.

Administrative support is provided for clinical operational components.

Job Qualifications

  • Candidates in consideration will hold certification in General Pathology or Anatomical Pathology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Eligible for independent licensure in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS).
  • Be a member of the medical staff of the SHA and hold an academic appointment in the College of Medicine
  • Experience, at an operational level, as a medical leader who has worked in partnership with administrative leaders to develop innovative programs in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
  • 3+ years in a leadership position with progressive advancement
  • Has knowledge of and experience in guiding health quality improvement processes and initiatives
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license
Preferred Experience:
  • Canadian Certified Physician Executive Credential would be an asset
  • Advanced education in Health Care Administration, Public Administration and/or Leadership Studies would be an asset
  • Participation in the Canadian Medical Association's Physician Leadership Institute would be an asset
  • Additional training and/or education in leadership/management would be an asset
