Job Description: The Psychiatric Liaison Nurse, (PLN) exercises independence in the provision of individualized assessment & care to patients in the ER with mental health &/or substance misuse challenges. The PLN works closely with the physicians, psychiatrists, Community MHAS & other Health Authority & community stakeholders, to develop & deliver high quality services for persons presenting to Emergency with mental health & addiction concerns. The incumbent provides patient & family education/support while the patient is in the emergency department & acts as a role model/clinical resource for management of psychiatric, intoxicated & aggressive patients. The PLN will be responsible for caregiver policy & procedures development. The incumbent is responsible to lead others through the development of a long-term vision for this position. This involves the research, development, coordination & evaluation of an integrated program. This PLN is expected to work as a part of the emergency service team.

Experience

  • Three years full-time experience in Acute Psychiatric or Community MH Nursing

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Other Education and Training

  • Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing is acceptable
  • Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Basic CPR, ASSIST preferred

Competencies

  • Basic - Keyboarding skills
  • Basic - Computer skills
  • Advanced - Interpersonal skills

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the the Provincial Mental Health Services Act and Regulations
  • Knowledge in critical thinking processes
  • Knowledge in Mental Health nursing processes and appropriate interventions
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with policies/procedures of SHA/MHAS/ED
  • Knowledge in mental health/mental illness impact on client, family and community
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Knowledge in applicable health promotion and health prevention initiatives
  • Ability to be resourceful
  • Knowledge of mental health and mental illness issues in a variety of settings
  • Ability to develop, evaluate and modify programming provided to clients
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships/partnerships
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate with community agencies
  • Ability to plan/organize/coordinate with other multidisciplinary team members
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Current knowledge of medical and psychosocial interventions

  • Ability to use a variety of assessment procedures and interviewing skills
  • Knowledge in local human service organizations, resources, referral procedures

  • Understands Mental Health Services Act, forms, policies & procedures of SHA/MHAS

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Health Promotion/Prevention initiatives in MHAS
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions
