Backed by a legacy of engineering excellence, reliability and industry-leading customer service, Telesat has grown to be one of the largest and most successful global satellite operators.
Telesat Lightspeed, our revolutionary Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, scheduled to begin service in 2027, will revolutionize global broadband connectivity for enterprise users by delivering a combination of high capacity, security, resiliency and affordability with ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds. Telesat is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and has offices and facilities around the world.
The company’s state-of-the-art fleet consists of 15 GEO satellites, the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1 and one LEO 3 demonstration satellite. For more information, follow Telesat on X and LinkedIn or visit www.telesat.com
Our Lightspeed RF System Engineering team defines the performance required of all RF elements in the satellite communication system. This job posting desires management experience, but we will equally consider candidates who are solid individual contributors with some team-lead assignments in the past, and Telesat will provide on-the-job training to become an effective manager.
As a Manager of Radio System Engineering, you will lead all technical aspects of the radio system architecture of the Telesat Lightspeed systems in terms of air interface definition, concept of operations, functional descriptions, and physical implementation of the RF functions. In particular, you will define the functional and performance requirements related to the radio system function as applicable to the satellite payload, user terminals, and landing stations.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Bring expert-level experience in taking an RF design to market, where you contributed to the RF trade space. Trade space includes aspects like ACP, PAR, out-of-band emissions, pass-band ripple, group delay, etc. You will support the existing team in finalizing the definition of all aspects of the radio system implementation involving agile multi-beam phased array antennas using beam hopping.
Support the definition of operations for all phases of the functional requirements, including user terminal commissioning, network entry, satellite handovers, time synchronization, adaptive coding, and modulation (ACM), among others.
You will serve as the principal system architect for defining all air interfaces between the user terminals, landing stations, and satellite payloads.
Work with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, and user terminal and landing station engineers to partition functions between hardware and software domains.
Work with the system modeling team to provide guidance on system design assumptions to be considered in the system model.
Develop strategies for modeling link performance accounting for impairments of the different elements in the system.
Collaborate with the Verification and Test group to plan proper validation of the requirements to ensure appropriate system performance.
Stay involved within the DVB standard forum and provide recommendations as part of Telesat's engagement on the forum.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
B. Sc. in Electrical, Computer, or System Engineering and at least 15 years of relevant experience in RF communications systems and/or RF equipment manufacturing.
Experience taking an RF design through iterations and specification changes through low-rate equipment production.
Experience in system design, requirement management, and communication systems performance assessments
Desired knowledge of DVB standards such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2 standard
Knowledge of digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single and multi-carrier techniques, modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM
Have a good understanding of MATLAB or other tools for modeling and analyzing RF communication systems.
Thorough understanding of RF passive and active components
Experience characterizing radio performance at microwave frequencies, including rain fade and its effects on the communication links.
Knowledge of RF transceiver architectures and digital communication theory
Highly collaborative team player who can quickly earn the confidence of co-workers and teammates.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, demonstrating that you have communicated effectively with management, engineering teams, and partners/suppliers.
DECISION MAKING & SUPERVISION:
In this role, the incumbent will provide leadership and make important technical recommendations on implementing the Lightspeed System design.
This role will expand during the program to an organization of between 3 and 6 engineering staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Typical office environment or Home Office
laboratory environment in Ottawa, Bethesda and home office if you have equipment.
